This shirt was part of the runway collection from Comme des Garcon Shirt´s Fall Winter 2018 collection as look 27.
For this collection, Comme the Garcons got together with the Jean-Michel Basquiat estate to use various of his paintings and artworks as prints for the shirts and t-shirts from the collection.
However, Basquiat's relationship with Comme des Garcons goes back to the time when Basquiat was still alive. Basquiat was a big fan of the designs from Rei Kawakubo and wore them all the time. This peaked when he walked on the runway for Comme the Garcons´ Spring/Summer collection 1987, just one year before his tragic death in 1988.
Basquiat is today celebrated as one of the most important artists of the 20th century and probably the most important artist of colour ever. He revolutionized graffiti art and ranks among the most expensive artists in the world, with auction prices surpassing the 100 million mark.
This shirt prominently features one of his artworks on the front and a dot design, as well as a grey wool panel on the back. It is the only monochrome shirt from the collection, being coloured in black on white.
